The Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) on Friday announced the election of five new members to its Athletes’ Committee for the 2026–2030 term, following voting held during the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games.
Uzbekistan’s Paralympic champion Asila Mirzayorova, Japan’s wheelchair basketball star Mari Amimoto, Republic of Korea’s Yoomin Won, China’s Shuai Zhao and Hong Kong, China’s Chui Yee Yu were elected to represent the voices and interests of Para athletes across Asia.
The five newly elected members are:
- Asila Mirzayorova (Uzbekistan) – Para Athletics
- Mari Amimoto (Japan) – Wheelchair Basketball
- Yoomin Won (Republic of Korea) – Wheelchair Rugby / Nordic Skiing
- Shuai Zhao (China) – Para Table Tennis
- Chui Yee Yu (Hong Kong, China) – Wheelchair Fencing
The elections took place from 18 to 23 October during the fifth edition of the Asian Para Games, with voting closing at 12:00 noon Japan Standard Time on Friday (23 October).
For the first time, voting was conducted through an online platform, with QR codes displayed at designated venues allowing accredited athletes competing at the Games to cast their votes.
The five elected members will serve a four-year term and will elect a Chairperson from among themselves, succeeding the current Athletes’ Committee Chairperson, Japan’s Hiroyuki Misaka.
APC President Majid Rashed had earlier highlighted the importance of the Athletes’ Committee in strengthening athlete representation within the organisation.
“Athletes are at the heart of everything we do. The Athletes’ Committee plays a vital role in ensuring their voices, experiences and perspectives are heard and reflected in the decisions we make for the future of Para sport in Asia,” Rashed said ahead of the elections.
The Athletes’ Committee plays an important role in ensuring that athletes’ perspectives are represented in the APC’s decision-making process and on its Executive Board.
The Committee also aims to reflect the diversity of the Paralympic Movement in Asia across regions, gender, impairment types and both summer and winter sports.
Two additional members may be co-opted onto the Committee, subject to APC Executive Board approval, to ensure broader representation of the Asian Para athlete community.
The APC congratulated the newly elected members and expressed its appreciation to all candidates and athletes who participated in the election process.
The organisation looks forward to working closely with the new Committee to strengthen athlete representation, promote their interests and further advance the Paralympic Movement across Asia.
