The Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) and the Agitos Foundation teamed up to support the provision of Classification Workshops in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The workshops for the sports of Table Tennis and Swimming took place in PyongYang from 13th to 16th May. The Table Tennis workshops were delivered by Professor Justin Jeon (Republic of Korea) and Dr. Sharad Pandit, (Australia) medical classifier and lecturer of the ITTF. Thirteen participants took part and covered topics such as an introduction to ITTF Classification system, medical background and also three classification areas, sitting, standing and intellectual impairment. Once the theory part of the workshop had been completed, the attendees classified five athletes.

The swimming workshop took a similar approach. This was delivered by Spyros Stavrou (Greece), Technical Classifier and Educator for IPC Swimming.

APC President Majid Rashed commented:

Classification is the foundation stone of Paralympic Sport. Training classifiers therefore is an important building block in developing para-sport. We’re delighted that the APC has been able to support this initiative in conjunction with the Agitos Foundation.
