Host nation of the Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games, South Korea swept five of the six gold medals offered in the newly-introduced wheelchair dance sport competition held over two days at the Ganghwa Dolmens Gymnasium, Incheon.
On Tuesday, the final day, LEE Young-Ho/LEE Eun-Ji (KOR) won gold in the Combination Latin class 2 and teammates CHOI Jong-Chul/CHOI Moon-Jun (KOR) emerged victorious in the Duo Standard Class 2.
Korea also clinched gold in rowing, shooting and tenpin bowling, all of which ended today.
JEON Mi-Seok/LIM Sang-Hun (KOR) secured the top spot in the rowing mixed team TAmix2x while Japan took silver and bronze went to Hong Kong China.
In shooting, the three-man team of JEON Jin-Hwa/PARK Jin-Ho/SIM Jae-Yong (KOR) scored a total of 1904.7 for gold, followed by China in second place and Thailand in third.
The South Korean anthem was heard three times in Anyang Hogye Gymnasium as the host nation took gold in the tenpin bowling mixed team events of TPB1+TPB⅔+ TPB⅔, TPB8+ TPB⅔+ TPB⅔, and TPB8+TPB 9/10 + TPB 9/10.
Despite the heavy drizzle in the Main Asiad Stadium, Malaysia secured gold and silver in the men’s long jump T20 with Abdul Latif ROMLY’s leap of 7.01m handing him the Games and Asian record.
“I’m happy with my result as I have achieved my goal and this medal is for my family and all the people who have helped and supported me,” said ROMLY.
Mohd Fazli FAUZIL (MAS) jumped a distance of 6.47m for the silver while Asaad Ahmad M SHARAHELI (KSA) took bronze with his result of 6.29m.
Uzbekistan added two gold medals to the three won in judo on Monday. In the men’s 73kg, Feruz SAYIDOV (UZB) took his place on the top step of the podium after defeating Iran’s Mohamad Ali SHANANI and Sharif KHALILIV (UZB) clinched gold leaving the silver for Rung CHATPHUENG (THA) in the men’s 81kg.
Powerlifting world record holder MOHSIN Rasool Khadim Mohsin (IRQ) faced fierce competition from LIU Lei (CHN) in the men’s 65kg category. LIU’s failed last attempt of 212.0kg gave MOHSIN gold but even after breaking his own record of 210.0kg by lifting 211.0kg, MOHSIN went further, succeeding with 213.0kg and then smashing his own record a few minutes later with 217.0kg.
“I had to keep lifting heavier because the Chinese athlete was giving me tough competition. For me, after the first attempt goes smoothly, everything else after that becomes easy,” said MOHSIN after receiving his gold medal.
The Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games is being held from 18 to 24 October 2014.
