It was finals day in the Goalball with both China’s men and women in action, with both teams facing Brazil in the bronze medal game. The women beat their opponent 6-0 but unfortunately the men lost out 3-5. Japan’s men faced Ukraine in the gold medal match and came out on top, winning 4-3 in extra time, a remarkable achievement for a team that only made its Paralympic debut in Tokyo. Scorer of the golden goal which sealed the victory, SANO Yuto said; “I just threw the ball I had the most confidence in, I’m thrilled to bring this win to Japan.”
The final Boccia medals were awarded with Asian nations in contention in every medal event. Hong Kong, China beat Korea to win gold in the Mixed Pairs BC3 match but had to settle for silver in the Mixed Pairs BC4 event in which Thailand won bronze. China won the Mixed Pairs BC1/BC2 event, beating Indonesia into silver place and Japan beat Korea for the bronze medal in this event.
The Judo competition began, Rio gold medallist and Hangzhou silver medallist, Uzbekistan’s Sherzod NAMAZOV got through to the gold medal final in the Men’s -60kg and in a tight contest beat Georgia’s ZURABIANI with a Waza-ari to win gold. Kazakhstan’s Akmaral NAUATBEK won by Ippon in her victory over France’s MARTINET to win gold in the Women’s -47kg final as did China’s SHI Yijie in the women’s -57kg final. Silver medals were won by Japan (HANGAI Shizuka Women’s -48kg) and Iran (BANITABA KHORAM ABADI Men’s -60kg) and India and China won a bronze each, giving a very strong showing for Asian nations on the first day of Judo.
At Wheelchair Fencing, China won both the gold medals on offer in the Foil Team events with the women beating Hungary and the men beating Great Britain.
In Wheelchair Tennis, KAMIJI/TANAKA won the Women’s Doubles Gold Medal match against the Netherlands. KAMIJI will face her Dutch opponent De GROOT again in the singles final. Japan’s young star ODA Tokito progressed through to the final of the men’s singles where he will face Great Britain’s Alfie Hewett.
In the penultimate day of Para Athletics, athletes from Asia were in record breaking form, with four of the five gold medallists setting new Paralympic records. China’s WEN Xiaoyan set a new Paralympic record in the Women’s 100m T37, making it her third gold medal of these games and her eighth Paralympic gold medal in total. Teammate WU Qing also set a new Paralympic record in the Women’s Shot Put F33 to win gold. JIN Hua also broke the Paralympic record he had set the day before in the Men’s 800m T54 to win gold. Uzbekistan’s Knusniddin NORBEKOV set a new Paralympic record in the Men’s Shot Put F35 event meaning that he has won a gold medal the past three Paralympic Games.
In the pool, China’s GUO Jincheng broke his own World Record to win gold in the Men’s 50m Freestyle S5 and JIANG Yuyan added a fifth gold medal to her Paris tally in the Mixed 4x50m Medley Relay – 20 points final, meaning she is still on target to match her Hangzhou gold medal tally of seven.
