First ever Paralympic medal for Oman, golden day for I.R. Iran’s women, Japan and China
Oman’s Mohammed AL MASHAYKHI won his country’s first ever Paralympic medal when he threw a Personal Best of 10.84m and clinched the Bronze in the Men’s Shot Put F32 with China’s Li LUI setting a new World Record of 12.97m to secure the Gold medal. This was one of China’s five Gold medals won at the Olympic Stadium today with Iran’s Hashemiyeh MOTAGHIAN MOAVI getting the other Gold for Asia in the Women’s Javelin Throw F56 and setting a new World Record of 24.50m on the way. Afghanistan’s Hossein Rasouli who faced such difficulties in leaving his home country, set a Personal Best in the Men’s Long Jump T47.
Iran’s Sareh JAVANMARDI was also in record breaking form when she won the first Gold medal on offer at the Asaka Shooting Range in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event, setting a new World and Paralympic record of 239.2. JAVANMARDI was a double gold medallist in Rio and will be hoping to equal her Rio achievement when she competes again on Saturday in the P4-Mixed 50m Pistol SH1 event.
In the first day of Road Cycling at the Fuji International Speedway, host nation Japan added to their Gold medal tally when Keiko SEGIURA won the Women’s C1-3 Time Trial. China also won Gold (Jianxin CHEN in the Men’s T1-2 Time Trial) and Silver in the Women’s H4-5 Time Trial (Bianbian SUN). Tomorrow sees the start of three days of Road Race medal events.
The Boccia individual Quarter and Semi-finals took place at the Ariake Gymnasium with Gold and Bronze medal matches taking place tomorrow. In the BC1 class, Asian hopes rest on Malaysia’s Chew WEI LUN who will face reigning Paralympic Champion, Great Britain’s David Smith in the final. In the BC2 class, Thailand’s reigning Paralympic Champion Watcharaphon VONGSA beat his teammate Worawut SAENGAMPA 4-3 to set up an all-Asia final against Japan’s Hidetaka SUGIMURA who beat Brazil’s SANTOS 3-2 to secure his place in the Gold Medal Match. For the BC3 class, both Korea’s players were knocked out in the Quarter-finals, so there is no Asian representation in the finals. In the BC4 class, Thailand’s Pornchok LARPYEN will face Slovakia’s ANDREJCIK in the Gold medal match whilst China’s Yuansen ZHENG and Hong Kong’s Yuk Wing LEUNG will face each other in the Bronze medal match.
In Football 5-a-side, it was China who came out on top against host nation Japan (JPN 0- 2 CHN) in the decisive match to see who would end up going through to the Semi-finals. China will now meet Argentina on Thursday to see who goes through to the Gold Medal Match.
In Goalball, China’s men beat Japan 7-4 to secure their place in the Semi-finals where they will face USA on Thursday.
In Wheelchair Basketball China’s women won their quarter-final in convincing fashion against Great Britain CHN 47 – 33 GBR. This means that they will face USA in the Semi-finals on Thursday 1 September.
In Sitting Volleyball, Iran continued their dominant display beating China in the final pool match. They haven’t lost a set yet at the Tokyo Games and will now go into Thursday’s Semi-finals to meet Bosnia Herzogovina, who beat Japan’s men in their final pool game to secure their spot.
