Mongolia, India, Korea and Sri Lanka get their first Gold medals, UAE and Kuwait also off the mark.
India shot up the overall medal table on Day 6 of the Tokyo Paralympic Games when they won two Gold medals. The first came in Shooting when Avani LEKHARA became the first Indian woman to win a Gold medal at either the Olympic or Paralympic Games in the R2-Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing. The second came in the evening session at the Olympic Stadium when Sumit SUMIT broke the World Record by an incredible 5.67m in the Men’s Javelin Throw F64 with Sri Lanka’s Dulan KODITHUWAKKU taking bronze.
Both India and Sri Lanka clearly have successful Javelin programmes as earlier in the day it was Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Priyan. HERATH MUDIYANSELAGE who got them off the mark by taking Gold in the Men’s Javelin Throw F46 and breaking the world record set by India’s DEVENDRA in Rio by 3.82m in the process. This time around DEVENDRA had to be content with Silver and Bronze went to his teammate Sundar Singh GURJAR.
The Olympic Stadium was also the venue for the first medals of the Games for Kuwait (Silver for Ahmad ALMUTAIRI in the Men’s 100m T33) and the UAE (Mohamed ALHAMMADI in the Men’s 100m T34 final. I.R. Iran secured two more Gold medals (Amir KHOSRAVANI Men’s Long Jump T12 and Mahdi OLAD Men’s Shot Put F11) and Fathimath IBRAHIM made the Paralympic debut for the Maldives and ran a Personal Best in the Women’s 100m T11 heats. It was not enough to progress to the finals unfortunately.
Mongolia also got their first medal of the Games and it was a Gold at the Powerlifting. Sodnompiljee ENKHBAYAR lifted a Paralympic Record of 245kg in the Men’s -107kg event to improve on his Bronze medal won in Rio. All three medals in the event went to Asia with Malaysia’s Yee Khie JONG claiming Silver and Iran’s Saman RAZI the bronze medal. Jordan added to their Gold medal tally with Jamil ELSHEBLI lifting 241kg in the Men’s +107kg event which saw another all-Asian podium (Iran’s Mansour POURMIRZAEI took Silver and Iraq’s Faris AL-AGEELI took bronze).
Korea bagged their first Gold medal in the Table Tennis when Young Dae JOO beat teammate Hyeon Uk KIM in the Men’s Singles Class 1. They also picked up a Silver in the Men’s Singles Class 4 (Young-Gun KIM) and China won Gold (Guiyan XIONG Women’s Singles Class 9) and Silver (Shuai ZHAO in the Men’s Singles Class 8). This was the final day of the Singles events in Table Tennis before the Team events start tomorrow.
In Football 5-aside, Japan lost 0-4 to Brazil but, given that Brazil have won every Gold medal at the Paralympic Games since the sport was introduced in Athens in 2004, this wasn’t a surprise. China beat France 1-0 in their match and these results see both teams lying in second and third in their group. With the top two teams in each group going through to the semi-finals, tomorrow’s match between the two Asian nations will be decisive.
In Goalball, China’s men beat Germany 8-3 which left them fourth in their group. This means that they will meet Japan in the Quarterfinals tomorrow (31st August) who finished top of their group. China’s women also were victorious, beating Canada 4-2, a result that sees them top their group and progress through to the Quarterfinals . They will play Brazil and Japan will play Israel on Wednesday 1 September.
In Wheelchair Basketball, Japan’s men’s team beat Turkey 67-55 in their final group match which meant that they finished second in their group and will meet Australia in the Quarterfinals on Wednesday 1st September. Korea’s and Iran’s men both finished fifth in their respective groups and so will play off for 9th and 10th placing on Thursday 2nd September. In the women’s event, China will play Great Britain in the Quarterfinals and Japan will take on the Netherlands. Both women’s Games will be played on Tuesday 31st August.
In Sitting Volleyball Iran’s men continued their campaign with a straight set win over Brazil to top their Group. They will play second placed China tomorrow before the slots for Thursday’s Semifinals are decided. Japan’s men have had two defeats so far and will play Bosnia Herzegovina tomorrow but are unlikely to progress. In the women’s competition, China beat the USA 3-0 and sit top of their pool ahead of their final pool match on 1st August against Rwanda.
In Boccia, the pool matches were completed and tomorrow will see the Quarterfinals in the Individual events. Athletes from Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, China will be in contention.
China stretched their lead at the top of the medal table again with eight more Gold medals. A total of twenty of the thirty-nine Asian NPCs are now on the medal table.

Tomorrow, the Wheelchair Tennis will see the Quarterfinals of the Singles with home country star Yui Kamiji facing China’s Zhenzhen ZHU. Afghanistan’s Hossein Rasouli will also compete in the Men’s Long Jump T47 event.
