The first medals in Para Archery were awarded today (31st September) and China’s CHEN Minyi became the first gold medallist at Paris 2024 after beating Pultar Musilova SARKA of Czechia in the women’s individual W1 gold medal match.
After beating Sarka 136-129, Chen said: “She is being much more competitive than Tokyo. I believe that she is quite good and very hard working this time. In normal life, she’s very outgoing and is a good friend with me. I’m very excited. I never imagined that I could win this title again. It’s a huge happiness for me to win this title.”
Korea’s KIM Okgeum won bronze in the same event and in the women’s Individual Compound Open event, Iran’s Fatemeh HEMMATI took silver.
In Shooting Para Sport, Iran’s Sareh JAVANMARDI won gold in the P2 Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 Final to add to her three Paralympic gold medals won in Rio and Tokyo. India’s Rubina FRANCIS won bronze in the same event. In the Men’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event, Asian athletes took the top two podium places with Korea’s sharp shooter PARK Jinho in top spot with a new Paralympic record and Kazakhstan’s Yerkin GABBASOV in silver. Having won silver and bronze in Tokyo, Park now has the complete set of Paralympic medals but with two more events to come, he surely will be looking to add to his haul.
In the velodrome on the penultimate day of competition, China won three medals including Gold and Silver in the Men’s C1-3 1000m Time Trial when LI Zhangyu added a second gold to his games tally and LIANG Weicong a second silver to his. Their teammate QIAN Wangwei set a new World Record in the Women’s C1-3 500m Time Trial but this was only enough to secure silver in the combined event.
At the Table Tennis, China won three of the four Gold medals on offer with ZHAO/MAO in the Mixed Doubles XD17, GU/PAN In the Women’s Doubles WD10 and CAO/FENG in the Men’s Double MD8 events.
In Para Taekwondo, Uzbekistan had two athletes in gold medal contests. In the men’s K44 -80kg event, Asadbek TOSHTEMIROV won a convincing victory over Mexican NAJERA but in the women’s K44 +65kg contest, Guljonoy NAIMOVA had to withdraw so won silver.
At the Para Athletics, China’s female throwers were on top form winning two Gold medals, and two Silver medals. It started with ZHAO Yuping who went one better than her Silver medal in Tokyo in the Women’s Javelin Throw F13, taking Gold with a throw of 47.06m which set a new World Record. XU Mian then won Silver in the Women’s Discus Throw F57 event before LI Yingli (Gold ) and MI Na (silver) in the Women’s Shot Put F37 final. This was LI’s second Paralympic Gold medal having won Gold on the track in Rio. Other notable performances from Asian athletes came from Uzbekistan’s SULTONOV Elbek who threw a personal best of 16.45m to win Gold in the Men’s Shot Put F12 event and Kuwait’s Faisal ALRAJEHI who won bronze in the Men’s T54 5000m race, getting his country onto the medal table for the first time at these Games.
In the pool, Singapore’s golden girl Pin Xiu YIP won her second gold medal of the games in the Women’s 50m Backstroke S2 final, taking her gold Paralymic medal tally to five. Japan’s KIMURA Keiichi won his country’s second gold medal of the games in the Men’s 50m Freestyle S11 event and in the corresponding women’s event China’s MA Jia took gold in a World Record time of 28.96.
This helped China to stretch their lead at the top of the medal table with 15 Asian nations now appearing.
