The first medals were awarded in Shooting Para Sport with India and South Korea picking up one of each colour and China getting a bronze. This dominant performance by Asian athletes started when India’s Avani LEKHARA retained her Tokyo Paralympic crown and won gold in the R2 Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 final, with Korea’s LEE Yunri in silver and India’s Mona AGARWAL in bronze. Lekhara reflected on her success saying; “It feels very nice to win another gold medal for my country and to defend my title. It is great motivation to have Mona Agarwal on the podium.”
Korea’s JO Jeongdu then won gold in the P1 Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1, with India’s Manish NARWAL in Silver and China’s YANG Chao in bronze. Speaking after winning gold, JO said; “ “This does not feel real. It is not the same as training. You have to concentrate harder and find your inner peace. My wife and unborn child. This is for them.”
In the final medal event of the day, Korea’s SEO Huntae picked up bronze meaning that Asian athletes had won seven of the nine medals on offer at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre.
It was the first day of competition at the Para Athletics with medals being awarded in the morning session. Japan’s KARASAWA Kenya won the first medal for Asia when he won SILVER in the Men’s 5000m – T11. Uzbekistan’s MIRZAYOROVA Asila won her country’s first gold medal of the games in the women’s Long Jump T11 final and China’s ZHOU Xia won gold in the women’s 100m T35 final, thus retaining her Paralympic crown from Tokyo. At the end of the morning session, four Asian countries had won a total of 9 medals.
In the evening, the highlight of the night was DI Dongdong from People’s Republic of China, who earned the World Record with Para Athletics, Men’s Long Jump – T11. While PURNOMO Saptoyogo, won silver in Men’s 100m – T37, being the first medal of the Indonesian representation in Paris 2024.
In the Pool, Japan’s SUZUKI Takayuki added silver to the gold he won yesterday, this time in the Men’s 100m Freestyle S4. Then China’s YANG Hong broke his own World Record that he had set at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games to take gold in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley SM6.
The night shone with world records in swimming. both representing People’s Republic of China, YANG Hong, obtained a World Record in Swimming, Men’s 200m Individual Medley – SM6 and the China in Swimming team, Mixed 4x50m Freestyle Relay – 20 points.
In Table Tennis China’s HUANG/JIN faced off against Germany’s GREBE/WOLF in the Women’s Doubles WD14, which resulted in an incredible victory for the Chinese team, obtaining the gold. Then it was an all Asian final in the Women’s Doubles WD5 gold medal match. With another incredible podium of Asian delegations. LIU Jing and XUE Juan (4) from China, won the gold. While SEO/ YOON (1) and ASAYUT/ BOOTWANSIRINA (5), won silver and bronze respectively.
The Para Taekwondo four medals were up for grabs. With the Victory of Nepal, this is the first medal for the representation, with the silver of GOVERDHAN Palesha (8) in Women K44 -57kg. While the representative of the People’s Republic of China, LI Yujie (5) (K44), was the gold in the same event.
At the end of Day 2, China continues to top the list in the medal table. Followed by Uzbekistan, who climbed to second place, Japan and Korea, the latter began to accumulate their medals on the second day of events, as did Indonesia and Nepal.
