41 of the 45 Asian NPCs sent the largest ever cohort of athletes from Asia to Paris, making up c. 25% of the total number of athletes. 44% of Asian athletes in Paris were female which is the highest ever number and is a significant increase on the London Games where the figure was 33%.

There were entries from Asia in all sports  and 22 Asian nations won medals, with Japan making it into the overall top ten. Asian nations won a total of 464 medals, 52 more than in Tokyo.

Speaking at the end of the games, Asian Paralympic Committee President Majid Rashed said; “These have been a superb games –  having crowds back and seeing how they have all been enthralled with the sport has been fantastic. To see the growth in the number of athletes from Asia, and particularly the number of female athletes, makes me very proud. This and the increase in medals won by Asian NPCs shows that are continuing to grow and develop para sport in Asia and it is paying off on the world stage.

“There have been so many notable performances but the two that spring to mind straight away are Palesha Goverdhan winning Nepal’s first ever medal at a Paralympic or Olympic Games and China’s Yuyan Jiang’s seven gold medals in the pool, repeating what she did in Hangzhou. “I send my congratulations to all Asian NPCs and athletes though, who have shown in Paris that nothing is impossible.”
