Asian Paralympic Committee CEO Tarek Souei travelled to Seoul to take part in the Seoul Olympic Legacy Forum and was part of a ceremony to launch a Global Environment, Social Responsibility and Governance (ESG) Alliance
During the Global ESG Alliance Declaration ceremony, Souei made the following declaration; “The vision of the Asian Paralympic Committee is to make for an inclusive Asia through sport. We are committed to having the best governance to help us drive inclusivity and sustainability across all our sporting initiatives. Our focus is to create accessible and eco-friendly environments that empower athletes with disabilities while promoting positive social impact across Asia.”
Speaking about the forum Souei stated; “I am honoured to be invited to attend this event. The Seoul Games were the first in history where the Olympic and Paralympic Games were held in the same year in the same city and this leadership continues over 30 years later through the hosting of this innovative forum. At the APC we organise two major para-sport events and we welcome the initiative of the Global ESG Alliance and the seven commitments therein to ensure that sport plays its part in building a better world for future generations.”
The seven commitments made by members of the alliance are
1.To collaborate and make best efforts to create a better world through sport by implementing sport ESG management.
2. To prepare and actively implement measures to achieve carbon neutrality in all venues where sport activities occur, including sport facilities and stadiums, in accordance with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
3. To make eco-friendly practices a part of daily operations, such as minimizing the use of disposable products in workplaces, and to strive to encourage customers, partners, and stakeholders to join these efforts.
4. To strengthen social contribution activities by actively utilizing tangible and intangible infrastructures to address various forms of discrimination in society and to enhance the physical and mental health of all members through sport.
5. To strive to ensure that future generations understand the value of sport and participate more actively in sport activities.
6. To act beyond the ethics established by society, following their own personal conscience, and work to ensure that corruption, violence, and other negative practices that have existed in sport are permanently eliminated from the global sport scene.
7. To respect diversity by promoting the participation of women and people with disabilities in sport and will work towards enhancing transparency in various aspects.
Over 300 participants attended the event and took part in various lectures and workshops designed not just to look back at the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games being held in Seoul but to also take a forward look at how future events can build towards achieving sustainable development.
