APC President Majid Rashed congratulates newly-elected OCA President His Excellency Sheikh Joaan

Asian Paralympic Committee President Majid Rashed congratulated His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani who was elected unopposed as the new President of the Olympic Council of Asia, during its 46th General Assembly held in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent on Monday.

Sheikh Joaan, the President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, succeeded India’s Randhir Singh to become the 22nd President to serve the Olympic Movement in Asia since the first ever multisport Games were held in 1913.

The election was held at the OCA General Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan with the 45 Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs) in attendance as well as President of the Republic of Uzbekistan H.E Shavkat Mirziyoyev, APC President Rashed and CEO Tarek Souei. Overall, more than 500 delegates and guests attended the GA that including representatives from including from IOC, IFs, AFs and Games Organising committees.

Congratulating on the election, APC President Rashed said: “On behalf of the Asian Paralympic Committee, I warmly congratulate His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani on his election as the President of the Olympic Council of Asia. With his leadership and vision, I strongly believe that he will make significant contribution to the continued growth of the Olympic movement in the region.

“Much like we say: Together we are stronger. This shared belief with His Excellency Sheikh Joaan will inspire us to work collectively towards a more united and stronger sporting movement in Asia.”

Apart from attending the OCA General Assembly, APC President Rashed and CEO Souei attended a series of meetings and official engagements, including opening of an aquatic venue in Tashkent. The APC officials met with Uzbekistan Minister of Sports H.E. Mr. Adkham Ikramov and Her Excellency Shakhnoza Shavkatovna Mirziyoyeva, First Deputy Director of the National Agency for Social Protection, First Deputy Chairperson of the National Paralympic Committee of Uzbekistan during their visit.
