KUALA LUMPUR, 20 May – Delegates from some 25 National Paralympic Committee from Asia were in Kuala Lumpur from 14 to 17 May for the Pre-Delegates Registration Meeting (Pre-DRM), which took place at the Impiana Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
The meeting, hosted by the Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) and in collaborated with the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) was successfully conducted by a five-member team from the London Organising Committee for Olympic & Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
The Pre-DRM was conducted to resolve issues related to registration of contingents, sports, events and participation of Asia NPCs in the coming Paralympic Games in London, which commences on August 27.
APC President Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin expressed satisfaction with the Pre-DRM exercise which not only resolved various issues, but also provide opportunities for member countries to discuss matters related to the Asian paralympic movement and current development in their respective NPCs.
APC member nations from the five sub-regions who attended the Pre-DRM include Brunei, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia (South East Asia), China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Korea, Macau, North Korea (East Asia), India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan (South Asia), Iran (Central Asia) and Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia from West Asia.
In conjunction with the Pre-DRM, APC President held several side meetings with delegates from NPCs, including 2014 Asian Para Games hosts South Korea. Datuk Zainal also held discussions with several APC Board members during the meeting.
In a dinner hosted hosted by the PCM, Datuk Zainal urged APC members to be vigilant and united to face and overcome future challenges in developing the Asian paralympic agenda.
“Asia has achieved many milestones since its establishment, we need to continue to move forward, moving in tandem and to be united to ensure that Asia emerge as one of the major forces in the world paralympic scene,†said Datuk Zainal.
