NPC Maldives granted IPC provisional membership status

The Paralympic Movement in Asia has received a boost after the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) Governing Board granted provisional membership to the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Maldives at their recent meeting in Rome.

This means that NPC Maldives has automatically become a provisional member of the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) growing the number of member nations in Asia to 44. The new member will be added to South Asian sub region alongside India, Bhutan, Afghanistan among others.

Welcoming the newest NPC, APC President Mr. Majid Rashed said: “Having supported them on this journey, we are very happy to welcome NPC Maldives to the Asian Paralympic Family. We look forward to working closely with them to develop the Paralympic Movement in their country and ensure that para-athletes from the Maldives progress to compete at the highest level.”

Representatives from the island nation attended the Indonesia 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta and the APC General Assembly in Dubai, in February.

As per the IPC Constitution, full membership requires the ratification of the IPC General Assembly and this will be put forward at the next GA which takes place in Bonn in October.
