Day 8 Summary Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games

More Chinese medals including a clean sweep for Hongqiong Yang.

China’s Hongqiong YANG made it three from three when she won Gold in the Para Cross-Country Skiing Women’s Middle Distance Sitting race on day eight of the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games. The 32-year-old from Yunnan Province was competing at her first Paralympic Games and stood on top of the podium in all three events that she was entered into, beating American legend Oksana Masters into Silver on all three occasions.

China also picked up two more gold medals in Para Cross-Country Skiing with Chenyang WANG (Men’s Middle Distance Free Technique Standing) and Zhongwu MAO (Men’s Middle Distance Sitting) bolstering their country’s Gold medal tally.

Over at the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre, it was the Women’s Slalom races today. China won two silver and one bronze here and tomorrow it will be the men’s turn for Slalom races in what will be the final Para Alpine Skiing medal events (Sunday 13 March).

In the final of the Wheelchair Curling, China were hoping to defend their PyeongChang Gold medal and faced Sweden. They were 1-2 behind going into the fifth end but took this by 4 to lead 5-2. Sweden had the hammer and took one in the sixth, but China had another strong seventh end, taking three to put the match beyond Sweden and retain their crown.

The final medal event of the day saw an all Asia play off for the Bronze medal in Para Ice Hockey. It was to be China’s day as they defeated Korea 2-0.

On the penultimate day of sport, China lead the medal table with 58 medals, 18 of which are Gold, a considerable improvement on their one Gold medal won in PyeongChang.

Tomorrow will see the final medals awarded in Para Alpine Skiing (Men’s Slalom), Para Cross-Country Skiing (Mixed and Open 4×2.5km Relay) and the final of the Para Ice Hockey between USA and Canada before the Closing Ceremony brings the Games to a close.
